Banned Books and Hidden Stories

List of podcasts curated by: Traci Thomas, host of The Stacks

Thank you to Traci Thomas for curating this mid-week mini-list for us on this important topic!

Traci writes:

We spent an entire week on The Stacks talking about banned books. And the thing that kept coming up was the ways in which the history of America is constantly obscured to tell a story that was never there. The attempted bans on "critical race theory" and to erase queer narratives is all part of this effort.

I want no part of it, so I'm highlighting podcasts that have found a way to illuminate history for me. I hope folks will learn something new or at least think about history in a new way.

Podcast Recommendations

Podcast: It’s Been a Minute with Sam Sanders

Episode: ACT UP: A History Of AIDS/HIV Activism

Description: A conversation with author and activist Sarah Schulman about her history of the ACT UP movement in NYC in the 1980s and 90s. I loved thinking about the history of resistance and the ways it is connected to resistance movements today.

Podcast: Still Processing

Episode: Wake

Description: This episode does what all my favorite storytellers do. It creates a narrative and connects the dots. Jenna and Wesley talk about Parasite, and Watchmen, and Thomas Jefferson's home, and the idea of "wokeness.” It is brilliant.

Podcast: The Stacks

Episode: Banned Books in The Stacks with Alison Bechdel and Kelsey Reynolds

Description: I of course have to plug my own podcast's miniseries on banned books. I wanted to talk to all different kids of people about the affects of banned books and what’s at stake. I got to talk with librarians, students, politicians, and authors in an attempt to think more deeply at what is lost when books are banned.
